Cultural Cookies

While traveling in South Africa, Heather McCartney, a New York City dance teacher, became interested in the tribal arts of the Ndebele and Zulu nations. When she returned home, she wanted to share her experiences. She recalls, "I fashioned an old cookie cutter to replicate the shape of the masks I'd collected and made masklike cookies to give as gifts." Realizing that they could offer a way to educate people about African culture, McCartney created Ethnic Edibles to sell her unique cookies. She also developed a baking kit that contains African-motif cookie cutters of her own design, chocolate cookie mix, an icing bag, recipes, and stories about the doll, drum, mask, and map of Africa that the shapes represent.
